R20 000 loan

R20 000 is above the R8 000 ceiling for short-term credit, so it is a personal loan: an annual interest rate on a reducing balance, repaid over years rather than months. This page explains how that changes the cost and what to ask for.

What it costs — work it out

Check these three things before you sign — here or anywhere

  • The lender’s NCRCP number is published on its own site, and it checks out in the National Credit Regulator’s register.
  • The pre-agreement quote breaks out the total cost of credit: interest, initiation fee, service fee and VAT — as one figure you can compare.
  • Nobody asks you for an upfront “release fee”. A registered credit provider never charges you before it pays out.

What R20 000 actually costs

At R20 000 you are firmly in personal loan territory, with terms typically running two to four years. Every South African provider prices this on your individual credit profile, so published ranges are wide and the quote is what counts.

The single most expensive decision here is the term. Stretching R20 000 from 24 months to 48 halves the instalment and far more than doubles the interest. Ask any lender for the total cost of credit at both terms before choosing.

Above R8 000 the short-term caps no longer apply

R20 000 exceeds the R8 000 statutory ceiling for short-term credit, so the 5%-a-month cap and the capped initiation and service fees do not apply to it. This is an unsecured credit agreement priced at an annual rate on a reducing balance, and the rate you are offered depends on your credit profile. We do not publish an estimate for it, because any figure we invented would be wrong for most people. Ask each lender for the total cost of credit on a written quote.
