ZarCash compares loan offers from NCR-registered credit providers and may earn a commission when you apply. Every offer names the registered lender behind it. How we make money

Small business and startup finance

Consumer credit is a poor instrument for business funding: the amounts are small, the terms are short, and the debt is yours personally regardless of what happens to the business. South Africa has a developed set of small-business funding institutions, and they are worth exhausting before a personal loan.

Every figure is transcribed from the provider’s own published material. Where a provider does not disclose something, this table says so rather than estimating it. Last checked 10 August 2026. What it costs — work it out

Set the amount and the term and see the instalment and the total repayable, with every fee the National Credit Act allows and VAT included. An estimate at the legal maximum — not a quote, and not an offer.

Check these before you borrow — each can cost less

  • The Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA) for business support.
  • The Small Enterprise Finance Agency (SEFA) for small business funding.
  • The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) for entrepreneurs under 35.
  • Enterprise and supplier development programmes run by large corporates.

Check these three things before you sign — here or anywhere

  • The lender’s NCRCP number is published on its own site, and it checks out in the National Credit Regulator’s register.
  • The pre-agreement quote breaks out the total cost of credit: interest, initiation fee, service fee and VAT — as one figure you can compare.
  • Nobody asks you for an upfront “release fee”. A registered credit provider never charges you before it pays out.

What makes this different from ordinary borrowing

The development finance route starts with the Small Enterprise Development Agency for support and the Small Enterprise Finance Agency for funding, alongside the National Youth Development Agency for younger entrepreneurs and the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition’s incentive programmes. These are slower than consumer credit and considerably cheaper.

A short-term loan repaid over six months cannot fund a business that will not generate cash for a year. The mismatch between how quickly the debt must be repaid and how slowly a business produces income is what turns startup borrowing into personal debt.

Where you do borrow personally, be clear that you are the debtor. The business failing does not end the agreement, and the default lands on your credit record, not the company’s.
