Paying off a loan faster

Paying extra saves different amounts depending on the type of credit, and on short-term credit the saving comes from ending the agreement rather than from paying down the balance. Knowing which you have tells you whether to pay extra monthly or save toward a settlement.

Short-term
Settle in full to save
Long-term
Extra payments reduce interest

The initiation fee

On short-term credit the total is fixed up front, so paying a bit extra each month does not reduce the interest already built in. What saves money is settling the agreement in full early, which stops the remaining interest and service fees.

On a personal loan with reducing-balance interest, every extra rand reduces the balance interest is calculated on, so extra payments genuinely save. Confirm the extra is applied to capital rather than held as a credit toward the next instalment.

Either way, ask for a written settlement quote before making a large payment. The figure depends on the date it reflects, and a payment that falls short leaves the agreement running.

And do not empty an emergency fund to settle a loan early. Clearing debt only to borrow again in six weeks costs a second initiation fee and undoes the saving.
